| | How Can I Earn More Cash Back?
If you're looking for a cash back credit card, you know that in order to earn a sizable rebate, you will have to change the way you spend.
As we all know, credit cards are much like all of life's guilty pleasures: In the hands of the responsible, disciplined person, they offer very little downside providing strict rules are followed. We also know that if we look at statistics, the bulk of American consumers don't fall in to that category.
The facts are simple and alarming: Americans as a whole don't do a good job managing debt and for that reason the financial version of life's guilty pleasure, the credit card, should either be avoided altogether or used sparingly for those who have found themselves deeply in debt.
But what if you are responsible with your spending and borrowing? If that is you, then let's look at how to maximize those cash back rewards. There are some easy ways to increase your rewards on your cash back credit card without changing the amount of money you spend.
1.) Charge Your Utility Bills- It didn't used to be possible. The companies who provided you with gas, electric, telephone, and water didn't want to take credit cards because it eroded their profits. That is no longer the case in most instances. Utility companies are now happy to take your credit card. How much money do you spend on utilities each month? Multiply that by 12 months and you can see that this is quite a large boost to that cash back reward.
2.) Offer to be reimbursed- I serve on a non-profit board of directors where often, it's easier to charge a purchase to my credit card and later get reimbursed than it is to wait for a check from the treasurer. I'm happy to make the offer because it translates to a lot of cash back rewards at the end of the year. It also never hurts to continually show that you are responsible with your debt by charging large amounts and paying in full each month. It may not be a non-profit board. There may be something at your workplace where you can take advantage of this. Can you use your credit card for fuel rather than the company card?
3.) Keep an eye on the website- Often, there will be promotions that offer double or even triple rewards for certain purchases. This week may be gas stations while next week retail stores. By watching the credit card website, you can keep up on these and change your short term spending to maximize rewards. If it's gas stations this week, purchase a gift card from the gas station of your choice for the coming weeks' fuel purchases.
The best thing to do is take a look at your family finances and see where you are spending money that doesn't involve your credit card. Is there a way to use your cash back credit card for those purchases? The goal is to charge as much to your card as possible.
